Brewery wastewater features high chemical oxygen demand (COD), high biological oxygen demand (BOD), high suspended solids, sugar residues, yeast, nitrogen and phosphorus. Hazards of Direct Discharge of Beer Brewing Wastewater

If breweries discharge wastewater directly without treatment, the environmental damage is obvious and far-reaching.

First, severe water oxygen depletion. Massive organic matter in brewery wastewater is decomposed by microorganisms, consuming large amounts of dissolved oxygen in rivers. Low oxygen levels lead to fish death, destroyed aquatic habitats and broken ecological chains.

Complete Beer Brewing Wastewater Treatment Process

Standard brewery wastewater treatment adopts a mature three-stage process: Pretreatment → Anaerobic Treatment → Aerobic Advanced Treatment.

Pretreatment Stage: Pretreatment includes grating, oil separation, sedimentation, coagulation and regulation tank balancing. It removes large suspended solids, grain residues and floating substances, balances water quality and water flow, and reduces the organic load for subsequent biological treatment. It greatly reduces COD and BOD, meanwhile producing renewable biogas for power generation and heating. Anaerobic treatment cuts operating costs and realizes waste-to-energy recycling.

Aerobic Advanced Treatment Stage: After anaerobic treatment, the wastewater enters aerobic systems such as activated sludge and biological contact oxidation to further degrade residual organic matter, nitrogen and phosphorus. 4. IC (Internal Circulation Reactor)

IC is an advanced high-rate anaerobic technology driven by biogas internal circulation. Its treatment capacity is 3–5 times that of traditional anaerobic reactors, covering small land area with outstanding COD removal efficiency.
